Fondly known as "Brisbane's beating heart", the Story Bridge Hotel has been a constant presence in the city's landscape since 1885.
For generations, it has witnessed Brisbane's growth and transformation, becoming woven into the memories of countless locals.
Local Legend depicts the Story Bridge Hotel as I remember it in the late 1980s, when it operated as both a pub and backpackers' accommodation. At the time, I was in my teens and just beginning to explore Brisbane's nightlife. The hotel seemed larger than life—a place of possibility, independence, and adventure. I remember imagining the day I would finally walk through its doors, play a game of pool, and feel like a sophisticated adult.
This work is both a tribute to an iconic Brisbane landmark and a reflection on the role that familiar places play in shaping our personal histories. Through memory and nostalgia, Local Legend celebrates not only a much-loved hotel, but also a particular moment in Brisbane's cultural life and in my own journey toward adulthood.
